Breaking Waves conference 2019
Thank you to everyone who attended and made Breaking Waves 2019 a success! Read more about the event from our pressrelease (in Finnish).
Automation and digitalization are changing the world and transforming shipping in an unprecedented way. Climate change is arguably the biggest challenge of our time, and it is driving the entire maritime sector to focus on reducing the emissions and environmental impact of shipping. All the while worldwide maritime traffic is projected to increase rapidly in the coming years and the pressure to remain competitive in a global market is growing.
The European maritime cluster is facing some major challenges. However, it has enormous potential to address these issues and come out on top. From optimization of the logistic chain, to creating new technology and developing environmental innovations, the European maritime cluster is in a position where it has the capability to produce solutions, that can make a difference on a global scale.
Breaking Waves conference 2019 is bringing together the key players in the European maritime cluster to address the challenges and consider the keys to success in an increasingly tough global competition. Again, Breaking Waves will be part of the world’s leading start-up event SLUSH. This year focus will be on the perspectives of the entire logistic chain and ecosystems in maritime.

Fairway Forward, a new collaboration between the Finnish and Swedish maritime clusters, invites you to a day where we take steps forward towards green and smart shipping. The aim of the seminar is to spread knowledge and best practice and foster collaboration within research and innovation between Finland and Sweden. The program will include best practice case examples from each country and a panel discussion with top industry leaders and politicians. Suomen Meriklusteri SuomiAreenalla: Rohkeasti edellä – Meriklusteri luo sinistä kasvua Suomeen
Mikä tekee Suomen meriklusterista edelläkävijän? Tästä keskusteltiin torstaina 18.7. SuomiAreenalla Porissa, kun Suomen Meriklusterin elinkeinojärjestöt; Suomen Varustamot, Meriteollisuus ry ja Satamaliitto yhteistyössä Gasumin ja Rauma Marine Constructionsin kanssa järjestivät keskustelutilaisuuden merialan huippuasiantuntijoille ja päättäjille. Keskustelua veti MTV3:n vastaava päätoimittaja Tomi Einonen ja tilaisuus veti BEPOP asiantuntijakeskuksen täyteen yleisöä. Keskusteluun osallistuivat mm. SDP:n kansanedustaja Kristiina Salonen ja RMC:n toimitusjohtaja Jyrki Heinimaa. Myös meriteollisuusyritykset ABB ja Wärtsilä, sekä Gasum, Finnpilot ja elinkeinojärjestöjen johto olivat edustettuina paneelikeskusteluissa. Varustamoita edusti Viking Linen Johanna Boijer-Svahnström sekä Rederi Ab Nathalien Antti Partanen.
Keskustelun pääteemoina olivat vastuullisuus sekä innovaatiot ja osaaminen. Ilmastonmuutoksen torjunta nousi pääaiheeksi, niin keskusteltaessa uudesta hallitusohjelmasta kuin alan sisällä vaikuttavista suuntauksista. Ympäristövastuullisuus nähtiin suomalaisen meriklusterin vahvuutena. Meriklusterissa todettiin olevan ainutlaatuista osaamista, ja päättäjät saivat elinkeinolta kiitosta koulutukseen tehdyistä panostuksista. Korkean osaamisen turvin Suomessa on kehitetty uutta teknologiaa ja ympäristöinnovaatioita merenkulkuun. Suomalaisilla innovaatioilla voidaan vaikuttaa päästöjen vähentämiseen merenkulussa jopa maailmanlaajuisesti. Myös digitalisaation ja automaation suhteen Suomen meriklusterissa ollaan kehityksen kärjessä. Suuri osa meriteollisuudesta perustuu jo nyt tietotekniikkaan ja ohjelmointiin.
Kaikki osapuolet kiittelivät toimialarajojen ylittävää yhteistyötä ja alalla vallitsevaa yhteisöllistä henkeä, jonka ansiosta on onnistuttu nostaa meriklusteri merkittäväksi talouden alaksi Suomessa. Myös yhteispeli viranomaisten, päättäjien ja elinkeinon kesken koettiin sujuvan hyvin muihin maihin verrattuna. Keskustelun päätti Aalto yliopiston opiskelijat, jotka näkivät alan tulevaisuuden kirkkaana. Alavalinnan syytä kysyttäessä opiskelijat vastasivat että ”-Jos haluaa olla jossain maailman paras, kannattaa Suomessa valita meriala”.
